Max Fried and Max Scherzer have been two of the best pitchers in MLB this season, and tonight at Citi Field, they will both be on the mound as the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets wrap up their Saturday doubleheader.
In the first game of the double dip, new addition Jake Odorizzi will make his debut for Atlanta, while in the nightcap, the reigning World Series champions will send out their NL Cy Young contender opposite three-time Cy Young winner Scherzer.

A Repeat Result Likely in Rematch?
This was the pitching matchup when the Braves faced the Mets at home on July 11. In that game, Scherzer allowed one run and three hits and struck out nine in seven innings, and the Mets claimed a 4-1 win to open a three-game series at Truist Park.
Fried didn’t have his best stuff in that matchup, as he allowed two runs, five hits, and a career-high five walks in five innings.
Given that Fried has allowed four or more walks only five times in his MLB career and that the previous outing against the Mets is so far the only time he has allowed more than three walks this season, we will likely see better from him tonight.
The 28-year-old lefty goes into this start with a 5-0 record and a 2.73 ERA on the road this season. Of his eight road starts, seven have been quality starts.
That includes one in his previous outing at Citi Field, in which he allowed two runs and four hits and struck out six (with no walks) in six innings in a 5-2 win on May 2.
Unsurprisingly, Scherzer has been a beast at home, going 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA and a .191 OBA in six home starts. He’s also excelled in night games, which most of his starts have been. In 12 nighttime starts, he is 6-1 with a 1.97 ERA and a .182 OBA.
Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets Prediction and Picks
Braves vs. Mets Prediction: Mets to win
Braves vs. Mets Picks: Mets ML (Best Value: -132 at BetOnline) & Braves/Mets under 7 (Best Value: -110 at Bovada Sportsbook)
Fried has beaten the two best teams in the NL (by record) on the road already this season, winning at Dodger Stadium in April in addition to his May win at Citi Field. So, a gem and a win certainly aren’t beyond him here.
That said, I like the Mets to pick up the win in the nightcap and for the Braves to win the opener to make Sunday’s late afternoon showdown a rubber game.
And while neither of the two games thus far in the series have gone under, and the opener of today’s doubleheader likely won’t either, the value is with that play in this matchup.
